Brendan Holland, Photographer: Capturing life's beauty through the lens

“Practice lots and get out regularly. The more often you get out, the luckier you get.”

Brendan Holland, Photographer

Beginning his photographic journey through his accommodation business, Brendan turned to the photography of our gorgeous region to help persuade people to visit Bright. With such a strong appeal for quality images of the area, his prints are now in demand, and he’s known as one of our community’s leading photographers. His landscape images have him up early in the morning (and sometimes late at night), capturing the serenity of the fog lifting out of the valleys, the sun rising over the mountains, the spectacular starry night skies, and of course, the ever-changing colours we are so lucky to experience in Autumn. Brendan’s images have us constantly inspired to escape outdoors and explore each location firsthand. We are in awe of his pictures and look forward to using them in our projects. He even has a book of his favourite photos which we source for all our clients with short-term rental properties. Let’s hear what he has to say.

How would you describe your creative or design aesthetic?

I am very much a landscape photographer. The vast majority of my images are morning shots, as I love the stillness of that time of day, and we get a lot of fog/mist that adds an element of mystery to my shots.

What part of the creative process is most exciting for you and why?

It was getting out early when it was not looking that promising and finding an unexpected scene. Exciting!

Where do you find your inspiration?

In our local environment. The changing of the seasons also provides a lot of inspiration for me.

Describe a collaboration you are most proud of and why?

I have really enjoyed establishing the Bright Insta-meets with the Alpine Shire and the Bright Brewery during the Autumn season when the valley is full of colour during the turn of the season. These have been fantastic experiences to showcase the natural beauty of the regions and share skills and tips for better photography.

Have you undertaken any type of training (formal or informal)?

I am primarily self-taught, but I have had many opportunities to go out with professional photographers and learn how they go about their business.

Tell us a little about your creative journey and what led you to live and work in our stunning region.

We had lots of people tell us that our property was much more beautiful than our web images suggested (and business mentors suggested that we do need to be active on social media), so I started creating my own content by exploring lots of our local areas. Over time I developed a more robust aesthetic, which is hopefully still evolving.

For young creatives starting out, what's the best piece of advice you would give them?

Practice lots and get out regularly. The more often you get out, the luckier you get. Also, find others who might be able to mentor you and accelerate your learning curve.
