Modern alpine interior design breathes new life into a Mt Hotham apartment.

Nestled in the alpine village of Mt Hotham, Lawlers has completely transformed a tired 1980s apartment into a serene mountain retreat. The clients envisioned a haven after a day of skiing, hiking, or working, seeking a space that felt both cozy and calming, with Scandinavian and mid-century influences.

Britt White Studio revitalised the apartment with earthy tones and functional materials, creating an unpretentious and peaceful atmosphere. Key to the redesign was the kitchen, where sight lines were opened up and the layout reworked to connect seamlessly with the dining room. A custom bench seat now extends into the dining room, enhancing flow and functionality, and the space was maximised to include a Euro-style laundry and appliance pantry.

The bathrooms were fully reimagined, with creative plumbing solutions in the main bathroom and the addition of a toilet in the ensuite. In the lounge, a day bed under the window offers the perfect spot to relax and enjoy views of the weather rolling in across the Great Dividing Range, with added storage beneath for practical use.

Energy efficiency and durability were addressed with window rectifications to improve thermal insulation, while the entryway was re-clad for durability against snow equipment. A built-in bench provides comfort for putting on ski boots, with a recessed drying cupboard ensuring gear is always ready for the next adventure. A sculptural ski vice adds a stylish and functional touch to the space.

Throughout the apartment, new flooring, including hardwood spotted gum and modern cork, was laid to complement the furnishings, which were carefully curated to match the overall design. Britt White Studio managed the interior design and the project’s trades, ensuring every detail was executed perfectly while the clients enjoyed life over 500km away.

The result exceeded the client’s expectations, offering a modern alpine retreat that blends relaxation, style, and functionality.
